The history of Snappi® Fasteners

From tube and tin, Hennie Visser made the very first diaper fastener. He formed a template from a piece of thin wood, used tube to cut out the shape, tin hooks were fashioned, and the very first Snappi® fastener was ready. He fastened his baby girls’ diaper with this fastener, and it was perfect!

This unique diaper fastener was literally “born” out of frustration. Since his daughter’s birth, the effort to fasten a diaper with a safety pin proved too much and Hennie set his mind on developing a product which would benefit not only fathers having to change diapers, but could be used by the whole family for changing diapers easily. It is really as simple as one-two-three.

After a few years of creating a demand for his product, he successfully formed a company – manufacturing and distributing the fastener world wide. The fact that the Snappi® is made from non toxic materials ensures that the Snappi® diaper fastener is a sure winner.

Hennie’s idea was patented in as many countries as possible, to maintain and supply the best product all over the world to customers.

Today, in 2014, he is still pursuing perfection – ensuring that the Snappi® design keeps millions of mothers happy. From a humble beginning, to date over 55 million fasteners have been sold world wide and the company is going from strength to strength.The hooks and elastic of the product are under constant scrutiny and if there is a possibility that a change could enhance the performance of the product, it is done.

It is the main goal that this degree of success obtained is not only maintained, but that the company steadily grows. The company prides itself on good customer service, quality products, professionalism, innovation, and mutual business respect. Snappi® has committed to reducing our carbon footprint by:

  • Distributing products that are re-usable and promoting a lifestyle of re-use e.g. Cloth nappies, and Snappi fasteners
  • Switching off lights and equipment when not in use
  • Making use of natural illumination in our offices as much as possible.
  • Promoting the benefits of natural products
  • Reducing shipping boxes and packaging wherever possible
  • Recycling wherever possible, including boxes, used paper, plastic and technology items
  • Printing responsibly – creating a paper free environment wherever possible
  • Practising environmentally preferable purchasing when purchasing paper – paper manufactured from sustainable forestry, and which contains less bleach
  • Reducing business related travelling
  • Committing to constantly exploring avenues to reduce waste and energy usage within the company

Gold Pack Silver Award

The IPSA Gold Pack Awards is the showcase for the South African packaging industry and from its inception in 1973 it has grown into an event of considerable importance and prestige. The competition for medals is fierce. Snappi was awarded a silver medal at the 2015 Gold Pack awards for our packaging of the Snappi Baby Chair.

Snappi® currently supplies the South African market through large chain stores, retail outlets and baby product distributors. We are proud to be associated with, and work with the Pepkor Group, Edcon (Jet stores), Shoprite, and Ackermans South Africa, as well as the Pepkor Group in Africa.

Our Snappi® Diaper Fastener is widely distributed internationally to countries such as USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, United Kingdom and Europe, Malaysia, India, Japan, Korea and various countries in Africa. With the launch of our Snappi® Baby Chair – Snappi® has recently undergone a facelift as far as logo and brand file are concerned. This new, colourful, modern approach has received very positive feedback

Our unique stackable packaging design has received much  praise – ensuring that minimum floor space is utilised in store, as well as simplifying and saving cost for  freight and delivery. Ten units of Snappi® Baby Chair will easily and neatly  stack in a floor space of 48cm x 48cm! Our South African stores love this concept  – being able to  offer the consumer clearly visible, attractive and recognisable packaging without the added expense and effort of point of sale material.

By introducing Snappi® the penguin as a character, and making use of him for educational, environmental and community projects we plan to push through the association of our social responsibility policies to the consumer.
