ABBA House is a short-term place of safety based in Pretoria that cares for babies from birth to nine months of age. These babies are often abandoned or released for adoption. We give quality care to them until a suitable forever family can be found.

We currently care for 20 babies and toddlers between the ages of 0-3 years. Children are place into our care through the court due to abuse, neglect and abandonment. In the unit we see to their physical, emotional, spiritual, educational and medical needs. We accommodate children of all races and also care for HIV+ babies. Stimulation programs are designed to help all the children in our care to reach their goals for each developmental stage.

The little ones place in our baby and toddler unit are placed in “place of safety’. By this we mean that we only care for the child on a temporary basis and that the ideal is that the child be place with foster parents or be adopted as soon as possible. This is often a long process and therefore we focus on emotional bonding with the babies. This will assist the little ones later in life with attachments.

Bethany Home, in Umthatha, Eastern Cape, takes care of the most vulnerable in our society. These are the abandoned, abused and neglected children from newborn to six years of age. We offer holistic support, setting a foundation aimed at building them to be productive citizens of this country

At Christine Revell Children’s Home in Cape Town we provide full-time care for up to 49 babies and children from birth to five years of age who have been referred to us by social workers and placed here by order of a children’s court. The children are either neglected, abandoned, abused, orphaned and are accepted at the home irrespective of HIV status, race or gender.

Each year Hug A Baby provides 600 poor mothers of new babies at Montagu Hospital with a bag of nappies, knitted clothes, blanket and other baby needs. Hug A Baby is a much appreciated integral part of the Hospital’s maternity service You may help this worthwhile local project by knitting, bag making, giving 4ply/dbl knit wool, any colour; baby powders, lotions, soaps etc. old curtains for bags and clean used towels for flannels and of course donations.

Rays of Hope works across Alex to transform the lives of individuals, families and communities. Two of its projects are linked to babies:

• Pregnant teenage support is run at High Schools in Alex and aims at equipping girls with the necessary tools to make wise choices
• Child Headed Households supports orphans in Alex and many of the teenage girls have babies themselves and we encourage the girls to go back to school and so support the crèches where these babies and toddlers are placed whilst the girls are at school

Ray of Sunshine House is situated on a smallholding in Klipheuwel, where children in need live and play to their heart’s delight in a safe and loving environment. The children are taken into our family, so that they can feel part of a loving, sharing environment. We care for several babies and toddlers, until such time as they can be placed in foster care, or returned to their families. We are always in need of assistance from others. Tshwane Haven is under management of Tshwane Place of Safety Association which is a Section 21 [nr. 2003/021662/08] Non Profit Organization [031-809-NPO] a;though it is totally independant when it comes to getting financial assistance and donations.

Our objectives are to provide a support structure to Tshwane Place of Safety Association with regards to sick children by providing them with a secure home environment.

The Haven is geared to cater for 16-20 children.  The type of children that can be accommodated are severely malnourished children, HIV+ with other problems, TB with other problems, shaken baby syndrome, down syndrome, abused and premature babies as well as  children with heart and lung problems.

The Ruth Mailbag Group collects blankets, clothing, food and toys for all ages, from premature and newborn babies to senior citizens. Ruth Mailbag is based in Ladysmith, and consists of community members gathering their skills and time to assist those in need. Donations of Snappi products would be most welcome, and would be distributed to worthy causes in order to assist babies in need.
